Updates to System Center 2012 allowing for joint evaluation of System Center 2012 and Windows Server“8” Beta

This Community Technology Preview (“CTP”) enables System Center customers to jointly evaluate System Center 2012 and Windows Server “8” Beta. Customers should use this CTP for their evaluations of Windows Server “8” beta, and to provide Microsoft with feedback on both products. The CTP includes updates to the Virtual Machine Manager and Data Protection Manager components of System Center 2012.

Feature Bullet Summary: This CTP includes updates to the Virtual Machine Manager and Data Protection Manager components in support of new capabilities in Windows Server "8" Beta: The CTP enables the Virtual Machine Manager component's management server to run on Windows Server “8” as well as managing virtual machines (VMs) hosted on Windows Server “8”. The CTP also enables management of new Windows Server “8” features in Virtual Machine Manager:

  • Creation of Hyper-V Virtual Networks using Hyper-V Network Virtualization
  • Creation of virtual machines using the VHDx format
  • SMB 2.2 file servers as storage for virtual machines in a clustered and non-clustered environment
  • Live migration and live storage migration
The CTP enables the Data Protection Manager component's repository and agents to run on Windows Server ‘8” as well as providing protection in Windows Server “8” environments. The CTP also adds protection for new features in Windows Server “8”:
  • Hyper-V Virtual Machines on Cluster Shared Volumes 2.0 (CSV2.0)

If Remote SQL is to be used as backend, then Using a remote instance of SQL Server for DPM Database DPM for System Center 2012 R2 CTP1 introduces the ability to share one instance of SQL Server to host the databases of multiple DPM servers. DPM for System Center 2012 R2 CTP1 allows you to consolidate the databases of all your DPM servers to one SQL Server instance. Note: Install your DPM servers sequentially. Parallel installations will lead to errors. Scale Considerations
  • Each DPMDB requires 2.5 GB of memory. For instance, if 12 DPM servers share one instance of SQL Server, the computer running SQL Server must have 32 GB memory.
  • The disk volume on which the database is stored should have RAID configuration for better performance.
For more information on this page, see Installing a Remote Instance of SQL Server 2008 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757991.aspx Prerequisites
  • Run DPM Remote SQL Prep tool from the DPM Setup page on the computer running SQL Server.
  • Cumulative Update package 4 for SQL Server 2008 R2
Points to remember
  • You must not share a SQL Server instance installed by DPM. We recommend you use the SQL Server instance only for DPM databases.
  • TCP/IP protocol must be enabled on the SQL Server and TCP/IP client protocol on DPM server.
  • When setting up tape library sharing, provide the complete name servername\instancename\databasename.
  • The naming conventions for the DPM database have changed with this new feature, and you can find the name of the database from the Information button on the Administrator console.
