Windows Live Essentials 2011 version 15.4.3555.0308

Posted by bink on March 21 2012, 3:38 PM.

Microsoft released an updated build of Windows Live Essentials: 15.4.3555.0308, I hope this fixes a lot of the instabilities I have been experiencing in Windows Live Messenger.

I can truly say that WLM 2011 has been to most instable product from Microsoft I have ever used with so many crashes, freezes, 100% CPU etc.

What MS is saying about this release:

We released an update for Windows Live Essentials 2011 in all 48 languages. This minor release includes numerous updates across all of the programs in the Essential package, including Windows Live Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Family Safety, Writer, and Mesh. In the coming weeks, customers on Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7 will receive a notification prompting them to upgrade to the new version. Since this release contains critical fixes for the Essentials package, in a few months, the update will become required for all eligible customers.

Current customers moving from Windows Live Essentials 2009 to 2011 will see a whole host of new features, including new social features in Windows Live Messenger, the ability to chat with Facebook friends, photo fuse in Photo Gallery, new themes in Movie Maker, and much more.

New Lower Prices for Office 365

Posted by sumeethevans on March 15 2012, 3:55 AM. Posted in Microsoft Online.

As we rapidly add customers, the cost to run Office 365 becomes more efficient.  This is the beauty of the cloud where we can deliver economies of scale through our worldwide data centers and economies of skill with our engineers, administrators, and support teams operating the service.

With these efficiencies, we're able pass on savings to make it even more affordable for customers of all sizes to move to Office 365. So, I'm thrilled to announce that we're lowering the prices of most of our Office 365 for enterprise plans by up to 20%. These changes are effective today at Office365.com for new and renewing direct customers.

We are also excited to make pricing changes to Office 365 for education. In line with our longstanding commitment to education, we will make our "A2" service plan free to not only students, but also to faculty and staff.  A2 includes the core capabilities of Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync and the Office Web Applications.  Exchange Online and Lync Online are available today for academic institutions, and we'll launch the full Office 365 for education service starting this summer.   You can get more information on our Office 365 for education offering here

Microsoft Log Parser Studio

Posted by bink on March 15 2012, 2:50 AM.

Log Parser Studio is a utility that allows you to search through and create reports from your IIS, Event, EXADB and others types of logs. It builds on top of Log Parser 2.2 and has a full user interface for easy creation and management of related SQL queries.

Anyone who regularly uses Log Parser 2.2 knows just how useful and powerful it can be for obtaining valuable information from IIS (Internet Information Server) and other logs. In addition, adding the power of SQL allows explicit searching of gigabytes of logs returning only the data that is needed while filtering out the noise. The only thing missing is a great graphical user interface (GUI) to function as a front-end to Log Parser and a ‘Query Library’ in order to manage all those great queries and scripts that one builds up over time.

Log Parser Studio was created to fulfill this need; by allowing those who use Log Parser 2.2 (and even those who don’t due to lack of an interface) to work faster and more efficiently to get to the data they need with less “fiddling” with scripts and folders full of queries.

With Log Parser Studio (LPS for short) we can house all of our queries in a central location. We can edit and create new queries in the ‘Query Editor’ and save them for later. We can search for queries using free text search as well as export and import both libraries and queries in different formats allowing for easy collaboration as well as storing multiple types of separate libraries for different protocols.

Microsoft Script Explorer for Windows PowerShell Beta 1

Posted by bink on March 14 2012, 1:28 AM.

Microsoft Script Explorer for Windows PowerShell (pre-release) helps scripters find Windows PowerShell scripts, snippets, modules, and how-to guidance in online repositories such as the TechNet Script Center Repository, PoshCode, local or network file systems and Bing Search Repository

Microsoft® Script Explorer for Windows PowerShell® (pre-release) helps scripters find Windows PowerShell scripts, snippets, modules, and how-to guidance in online repositories such as the TechNet Script Center Repository, PoshCode, local or network file systems and Bing Search Repository. Microsoft® Script Explorer enables:

  • Integrated community and Microsoft resources to help you unlock the power of Windows PowerShell.
  • Seamless searching across online repositories to locate script samples relevant to you
  • Establishing and searching local, network, and corporate script repository is easy

System requirements

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 8 Beta, Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Additional Requirements:

  • Windows PowerShell 2.0/3.0 ISE (Client computer that is to run Script Explorer as an add-on)
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4

Instructions

The installer works on both x86 and x64 platforms. It tries to update the All Users Windows PowerShell ISE profile file located at %windir%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\ Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1. It updates the profile file for both x86 and x64. Refer to the troubleshooting section in User Guide for information on how to update the profile file manually in case the installer fails to do so because of insufficient permissions. User Guide: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=245439 Deployment and Troubleshooting Guide: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=245460 Known Limitations:

  1. During installation, Script Explorer updates the ISE profile file Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1 (All Users profile) located in %windir%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\ by adding the following entry %windir%\Script Explorer V1\ScriptExplorer CTP\Microsoft.ScriptExplorer.ps1. If the All Users profile file is already signed, this change invalidates the file signature and the user must resign the profile file. If the Windows PowerShell ExecutionPolicy is set to AllSigned, then user must sign %windir%\Script Explorer V1\ScriptExplorer CTP\Microsoft.ScriptExplorer.ps1 and %windir%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1.
  2. Script Explorer currently handles all signed snippets, scripts and modules as unsigned files. Using Script Explorer application, if a user saves a script, snippet or module to disk from TechNet/PoshCode/Network Location or Local file system, Script Explorer adds custom metadata to the file(s) which invalidates the file signature. The workaround is to resign the file.
  3. Searching for modules in Local File System displays all .zip file(s) present in the indexed local file system. These .zip files can be module files or any other compressed files. In these sutuations, manual filtering is needed.

Summary of Windows Azure Service Disruption on Feb 29th, 2012

Posted by bink on March 13 2012, 5:49 PM.

The leap day bug was caused by certificate bug as explained in the blog post on the root cause analysis.

A specific certificate, is given a one year validity range. It uses midnight UST of the current day as the valid-from date and one year from that date as the valid-to date. The leap day bug is that it calculated the valid-to date by simply taking the current date and adding one to its year. That meant that when tried to create this specific certificate on leap day set a valid-to date of February 29, 2013, an invalid date that caused the certificate creation to fail.

If Remote SQL is to be used as backend, then Using a remote instance of SQL Server for DPM Database DPM for System Center 2012 R2 CTP1 introduces the ability to share one instance of SQL Server to host the databases of multiple DPM servers. DPM for System Center 2012 R2 CTP1 allows you to consolidate the databases of all your DPM servers to one SQL Server instance. Note: Install your DPM servers sequentially. Parallel installations will lead to errors. Scale Considerations
  • Each DPMDB requires 2.5 GB of memory. For instance, if 12 DPM servers share one instance of SQL Server, the computer running SQL Server must have 32 GB memory.
  • The disk volume on which the database is stored should have RAID configuration for better performance.
For more information on this page, see Installing a Remote Instance of SQL Server 2008 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757991.aspx Prerequisites
  • Run DPM Remote SQL Prep tool from the DPM Setup page on the computer running SQL Server.
  • Cumulative Update package 4 for SQL Server 2008 R2
Points to remember
  • You must not share a SQL Server instance installed by DPM. We recommend you use the SQL Server instance only for DPM databases.
  • TCP/IP protocol must be enabled on the SQL Server and TCP/IP client protocol on DPM server.
  • When setting up tape library sharing, provide the complete name servername\instancename\databasename.
  • The naming conventions for the DPM database have changed with this new feature, and you can find the name of the database from the Information button on the Administrator console.
For information about Windows Server "8" Beta system requirements, see Installing Windows Server “8” Beta.
